Description
A serene Edo-period study of lotus flowers and fish, rendered with the meticulous observation and technical precision characteristic of Ito Jakuchu.
Ito Jakuchu, a merchant-turned-painter from Kyoto, produced this work during the mid-Edo period. He is recognised for his meticulous observation of the natural world, often combining traditional ink techniques with a high degree of technical precision. This composition depicts a tranquil aquatic environment where lotus flowers and leaves frame a group of swimming fish.
The artist employs a muted, earthy background to allow the white and pink petals of the lotus to emerge with clarity. The large, dark green leaves are rendered with fine, radiating veins, providing a structural contrast to the fluid movement of the fish. Jakuchu demonstrates a keen interest in the biological accuracy of his subjects, a trait that separated his work from the more stylised conventions of his contemporaries. The fish are arranged in a loose, diagonal formation, suggesting a sense of depth and motion within the water.
Jakuchu was known for his eccentric approach to painting, often spending long periods observing his subjects in their natural habitats. His work frequently appears in the context of the 'Kacho-ga' tradition, which focuses on birds and flowers, yet he expanded this genre to include a wider variety of aquatic life. The silk support provides a subtle texture that complements the delicate application of pigment. The composition is balanced, with the heavy foliage at the top and bottom corners creating a natural aperture through which the viewer observes the fish. This piece reflects the artist's ability to synthesise observation with decorative sensibility, resulting in a balanced and harmonious image that remains a fine example of eighteenth-century Japanese painting.
