Description
A detailed 1810 architectural engraving of St Michael and All Angels Church in Macclesfield, based on a drawing by William Alexander.
This fine etching and engraving depicts the exterior of St Michael and All Angels Church in Macclesfield, Cheshire. The work was produced by John Neagle, a skilled engraver active in London during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The composition is based on a drawing by William Alexander, a notable draughtsman and the first official artist to accompany a British diplomatic mission to China.
The print captures the Gothic architecture of the church with precision. The tall, crenellated tower dominates the left side of the frame, showing the characteristic stonework and window tracery of the period. To the right, the smaller, distinct structure of the Savage Chapel is visible, adding depth to the architectural study. The foreground features a paved churchyard with subtle figures, including a person walking a dog, which provides a sense of scale to the massive stone edifice.
Neagle employs a disciplined technique of cross-hatching and line work to define the textures of the masonry, the shadows cast by the buttresses, and the soft, rolling clouds above. The publication details at the bottom of the plate indicate it was issued by T. Cadell and W. Davies in the Strand, London, on 24 January 1810. This type of topographical print was popular among collectors of the era who valued accurate representations of British heritage sites. The print offers a clear view of the church as it appeared in the early nineteenth century, before later Victorian restorations altered its appearance. It remains a valuable record for those interested in the history of Cheshire and the development of British architectural illustration.
