This panel forms the dexter wing of the Diptych of Maerten van Nieuwenhove, commissioned by the donor in 1487. Hans Memling, a master of the Early Netherlandish tradition, presents the Virgin Mary seated in a domestic interior, holding the Christ Child upon her lap. The composition is defined by the meticulous application of oil paint, which allows for the rendering of textures ranging from the soft skin of the infant to the heavy folds of the Virgin's crimson mantle and the intricate embroidery of her bodice.
