Jacopo Pontormo, a central figure of the Florentine Mannerist movement, created this depiction of the Madonna and Child during the early sixteenth century. The composition is contained within an oval format, which directs the viewer's attention toward the psychological connection between the figures. The Virgin Mary is shown in a half-length pose, her gaze directed downward with a sense of quiet contemplation. The Christ Child rests against her, his form rendered with soft, rounded contours that contrast with the more structured drapery of the Virgin's garments.

Pontormo employs a specific approach to light and shadow, known as chiaroscuro, to model the figures against a dark, indistinct background. This technique isolates the subjects, removing them from a specific environmental context and focusing the viewer on the emotional exchange. The palette is dominated by the deep red of the Virgin's dress and the dark blue of her mantle, colours that were traditional in religious iconography but here applied with a distinct sensitivity to light. The elongated proportions and the slightly detached, melancholic expression of the Virgin are characteristic of Pontormo's mature style, which moved away from the balanced harmony of the High Renaissance toward a more subjective and expressive visual language.
