Description
A High Renaissance oil painting by Lorenzo Lotto, featuring the Virgin and Child with St. Jerome, St. Joseph, and St. Anne in a dramatic, intimate composition.
Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter active during the High Renaissance, produced this composition around 1534. The work depicts the Holy Family alongside St. Jerome and St. Anne, arranged in a tight, pyramidal grouping that draws the viewer towards the central figures of the Virgin and Child. Lotto employs a dark, atmospheric background that pushes the figures into the foreground, creating a sense of intimacy and psychological tension.
The Virgin Mary is shown in a blue mantle, supporting the infant Christ, who stands upright on her lap. To the left, St. Jerome is identifiable by his traditional iconography, while St. Joseph occupies the lower left, looking towards the child. St. Anne, the mother of the Virgin, is positioned to the right, her hand resting on her chest in a gesture of quiet contemplation. The lighting is dramatic, typical of Lotto's later career, where he moved away from the balanced clarity of his contemporaries towards more emotive, shadowed forms.
Lotto was known for his restless, individualistic style, often diverging from the established norms of the Venetian school. His ability to capture the specific expressions of his subjects gives this religious scene a human quality. The textures of the garments, from the heavy folds of the red robes to the delicate white headcovering of St. Anne, demonstrate his technical skill in oil painting. This work remains a clear example of his mature period, where he balanced traditional devotional requirements with his own stylistic preferences for complex figure arrangements and moody, low-key lighting. The composition avoids the static nature of earlier devotional works, opting instead for a dynamic interaction between the figures, each reacting to the presence of the infant Christ in their own distinct manner.
