The Virgin wears a voluminous blue mantle, which contrasts with the red and gold brocade cloth held behind her by two hovering angels.

Van Eyck demonstrates his mastery of oil paint through the precise rendering of textures. The metallic sheen of the brass fountain, the soft fabric of the child's swaddling cloth, and the individual petals of the surrounding roses are captured with remarkable clarity. The fountain itself serves as a symbolic element, often associated with the fountain of life or the purity of the Virgin.
