Bernardo Strozzi, a prominent figure of the Genoese Baroque, demonstrates his mastery of naturalism and light in this depiction of the Madonna and Child. Known as the Madonna della pappa, or the Madonna of the Porridge, the composition captures a domestic, humanised moment between mother and infant. Unlike the formal, distant icons of earlier centuries, Strozzi presents the Virgin Mary in the act of feeding the Christ Child, a scene grounded in the everyday reality of maternal care.

The artist employs a tenebrist approach, where the figures emerge from a dark, indistinct background.
