A 1967 geometric abstraction by Al Held, featuring a precise, symmetrical composition of black, yellow, and off-white planes.
Maltese Cross, created in 1967, represents a specific phase in the career of Al Held. During the 1960s, Held moved away from the gestural application of paint associated with Abstract Expressionism. He adopted a rigorous approach to form, favouring flat planes of colour and precise, clean edges. This work demonstrates his interest in the relationship between positive and negative space. The composition is defined by a stark, symmetrical arrangement. A large, off-white square serves as the primary field, interrupted by a bold black outline that forms the shape of a cross. Within the indentations of this black structure, Held introduces rectangular blocks of yellow. These yellow elements act as anchors, drawing the eye toward the centre of the canvas while simultaneously pushing against the boundaries of the black frame. Held was interested in the physical presence of the painting as an object. By removing painterly marks and visible brushwork, he forces the viewer to engage with the geometry of the piece. The interaction between the black lines and the yellow accents creates a sense of tension, despite the apparent simplicity of the forms. The work avoids illusionistic depth, remaining firmly rooted in the two-dimensional surface of the canvas. This period of his work is often associated with the Hard-edge movement, where clarity and economy of means are prioritised over emotional expression. The result is a controlled, intellectual exploration of shape and colour that remains visually arresting through its balance and precision.
