Description
A study of light and shadow in Tangier, this work depicts a man and his donkey before the Palais de Justice, rendered in Tanner's characteristic impressionistic style.
Henry Ossawa Tanner, an American expatriate who settled in France, frequently travelled to North Africa during the early twentieth century. This work captures a quiet moment in Tangier, focusing on the interplay of light and shadow against the architectural forms of the Palais de Justice. The composition is defined by the stark, sun-bleached walls of the building, which provide a neutral backdrop for the figure and his donkey.
Tanner employs a palette dominated by cool blues, greys, and whites, which contrast with the warmer, earthy tones of the animal and the figure's clothing. His brushwork is loose and expressive, prioritising the atmospheric quality of the scene over precise detail. The arches of the Palais de Justice are rendered with dark, heavy strokes, creating a sense of depth and weight that anchors the lighter, more ephemeral treatment of the street level.
Unlike his earlier, more academic religious paintings, this work reflects Tanner's interest in the everyday life of the region. He observes the scene with a detached, painterly eye, focusing on the geometry of the architecture and the rhythm of the figures moving through the space. The donkey, positioned in the lower left, serves as a visual anchor, leading the viewer's eye toward the man and the entrance of the building. The painting demonstrates Tanner's ability to synthesise his training at the Académie Julian with a personal, modern approach to light and colour. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he creates a scene that feels both immediate and timeless, capturing the specific quality of light found in the Moroccan city.
