This engraving by Sebald Beham, dated 1542, originates from his instructional treatise on human proportions. Beham, a member of the Little Masters, produced this work to assist artists in the systematic construction of the human head. The composition is divided into two distinct sections, each presenting a profile view of a head alongside a corresponding grid-based diagram.

The upper portion displays the male head, labelled 'EINES MANNES HAVPT', while the lower portion depicts the female head, labelled 'EINES WEIBES HAVPT'. Each subject is shown twice: once as a linear outline constrained within a numbered grid, and once as a fully modelled portrait. The grid system allows for the precise measurement of facial features, reflecting the period interest in mathematical harmony and the codification of beauty. Beham employs fine, parallel hatching to create volume and shadow, demonstrating his technical proficiency with the burin.

This print functions as a pedagogical tool rather than a portrait of specific individuals. The figures possess idealised features, consistent with the aesthetic standards of the sixteenth century. The inclusion of the artist's monogram, 'ISB', and the date within small shield-like cartouches confirms the work's provenance. Such prints were circulated among workshops to standardise artistic training.
