Description
A portrait by Robert Henri depicting a mother and child, captured with expressive brushwork and a bold colour palette.
Robert Henri, a central figure in the development of American realism, painted this portrait during his time in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The work depicts Maria, a member of the San Ildefonso Pueblo, holding her child. Henri travelled extensively throughout his career, seeking subjects that possessed what he termed a 'human quality', and his visits to the American Southwest resulted in a series of portraits that captured the individuals he encountered with directness and empathy.
The composition is defined by Henri's characteristic brushwork, which is both fluid and assertive. He avoids excessive detail, preferring to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the faces of his subjects. The palette is dominated by the bold, saturated red of Maria's clothing, which contrasts with the deep blue backdrop and the soft green of the infant's garment. This use of colour is typical of Henri's later period, where he moved away from the darker, moodier tones of his earlier urban scenes toward a more expressive application of paint.
Henri's approach to portraiture was rooted in his belief that the artist should capture the spirit of the sitter rather than merely recording their physical appearance. In this piece, the gaze of the mother and child creates a sense of intimacy. The paint is applied with a confidence that allows the texture of the canvas to remain visible in certain areas, providing a sense of immediacy to the work. By focusing on the humanity of his subjects, Henri produced a portrait that remains a clear example of his technical skill and his interest in the diverse populations of early twentieth-century America.
