A refined etching and aquatint by Cornelis Ploos van Amstel, depicting the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child within a decorative rose wreath.
This print by Cornelis Ploos van Amstel depicts the Virgin Mary in prayer before the Christ Child. The composition is contained within a circular frame, which is surrounded by a decorative wreath of roses. The artist employs a sophisticated technique of etching and aquatint to mimic the appearance of a wash drawing, a method for which he gained recognition in the eighteenth century. The tonal variations create a soft, luminous effect around the figures, suggesting a divine light emanating from the child.
Ploos van Amstel was a Dutch printmaker and collector who sought to reproduce the qualities of original drawings through experimental printmaking processes. His work often involved multiple plates to achieve the subtle gradations of tone seen here. The floral border adds a decorative element common to the period, balancing the central religious subject with organic, rhythmic forms. The use of a warm, neutral paper tone provides a unified background that allows the white highlights to stand out, giving the image a sense of depth and tactile quality.
The figures are rendered with a gentle grace, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the mid-to-late eighteenth century. The Virgin is shown in a posture of quiet contemplation, her hands clasped, while the infant Christ lies before her. The circular format focuses the viewer's attention on the interaction between the two figures, while the surrounding rose wreath provides a structured, ornamental frame. This print demonstrates the technical skill of the artist in translating the nuances of ink and wash onto the printed page, resulting in a work that retains the character of a hand-drawn study.
