Description
A 1710 portrait of Marie Adélaïde de Savoie by French court painter Pierre Gobert, capturing the elegance of the Versailles aristocracy.
Pierre Gobert, a painter active during the reign of Louis XIV, produced this portrait of Marie Adélaïde de Savoie in 1710. As a favoured artist of the French court, Gobert specialised in depicting the aristocracy, often capturing his subjects with a soft, idealised finish that was popular among the nobility of the era. The sitter, Marie Adélaïde, was a central figure at Versailles, known for her charm and influence over the ageing King.
In this oval composition, the Duchess is presented in a state of relaxed elegance. She wears a simple white gown, draped with a soft pink fabric that adds a sense of movement to the frame. Her hair is styled in the fashion of the period, adorned with small floral accents. The lighting is gentle, focusing on the sitter's face and the delicate texture of her clothing, while the background remains a neutral, dark tone to ensure the subject remains the primary focus. The inscription around the perimeter of the oval identifies the sitter and the date, a common practice for royal portraiture intended for display within the palace.
Gobert's technique here reflects the transition from the rigid formality of the earlier seventeenth century toward the lighter, more decorative sensibilities that would define the Rococo period. The brushwork is smooth, prioritising the rendering of skin tones and fabric textures over dramatic chiaroscuro. This portrait offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the French court during the final years of the Sun King's reign, documenting the appearance of a woman who was once expected to become the Queen of France.
