This work is a predella panel from the larger San Bartolomeo Altarpiece, commissioned for the church of San Bartolomeo in Bergamo. Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter known for his psychological depth and unconventional compositions, depicts the final moments of Saint Stephen. The scene is set in an open, rocky area, moving away from the static, formalised religious imagery common to the period.

Lotto captures the kinetic energy of the event. The figures are arranged in a dynamic, almost theatrical sequence. To the left, the saint kneels in prayer, his posture conveying resignation. Surrounding him are the figures responsible for his execution, captured in various stages of motion. The artist employs a palette of earthy tones, punctuated by the sharp red of the saint's robes.
