This triptych by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicts a chaotic scene from the Taiheiki, a historical epic detailing the fourteenth-century wars between the Northern and Southern Courts of Japan. The composition captures the intensity of combat, featuring Kato Masakiyo amidst a flurry of motion and weaponry. Yoshitoshi, a master of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, employs a dynamic arrangement that pushes the figures to the foreground, creating a sense of immediate action.

The print demonstrates the artist's technical skill in woodblock production. The figures are clad in detailed armour, their postures conveying the physical strain of battle. Yoshitoshi uses stylised, swirling clouds to fill the negative space, a common motif in his work that adds a sense of atmospheric tension. The colour palette is balanced, utilising earthy tones for the warriors and their horses, contrasted against the darker, swirling patterns of the background.

As a practitioner of the musha-e (warrior print) genre, Yoshitoshi moved away from the static compositions of his predecessors. He favoured dramatic poses and expressive facial features, which are evident here in the grimaces and focused gazes of the combatants. The triptych format allows for a wide, panoramic view of the conflict, drawing the eye across the three panels as the battle unfolds.
