Eishi, a former samurai who transitioned to the ukiyo-e school, is recognised for his refined depictions of women, often characterised by elongated figures and a sense of aristocratic grace. In this composition, he presents a contemporary woman engaged in the traditional game of kai-awase, or shell matching. The game involves pairing the halves of bivalve shells, which were often decorated with miniature paintings.

The subject is identified with the poet Kisen Hōshi, one of the six legendary poets of the early Heian period. By placing a modern courtesan in the role of a classical poet, Eishi employs the technique of yatsushi, or parody, which was a popular device in Edo-period art. This allows the artist to bridge the gap between historical literary figures and the fashionable inhabitants of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The woman is shown in profile, her hair styled in an elaborate fashion with numerous hairpins, a hallmark of the period's aesthetic. She holds a shell up to her face, examining the painted scene upon it, while a bowl sits in her other hand.
