Georg Friedrich Schmidt was a German engraver who achieved significant recognition during the eighteenth century for his technical precision. This work, titled Mater Amabilis, demonstrates his mastery of the burin and etching needle. The composition features a devotional portrait of a woman, her head bowed and hands clasped in prayer. The subject is enclosed within an oval frame, a common device in portraiture of the period to focus the viewer's attention on the facial expression and the play of light across the drapery.

Schmidt employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and stippling to render the soft folds of the headscarf and the subtle shadows upon the subject's face. The contrast between the dark background and the illuminated features creates a sense of volume. Below the oval, the print includes a formal dedication to Nicolas, Comte d'Esterhazy, complete with a heraldic crest.
