An atmospheric etching by Dutch artist Matthijs Maris, capturing a girl's head through soft, tonal lines and a dreamlike, impressionistic quality.
Matthijs Maris, a member of the Hague School, moved away from the realistic depictions of his contemporaries towards a more dreamlike, atmospheric aesthetic. This etching, titled Meisjeskop, demonstrates his preoccupation with light and shadow rather than precise anatomical detail. The subject is rendered through a series of delicate, layered marks that dissolve the boundaries between the figure and the surrounding space. Maris often returned to the same subjects, refining his approach to capture a specific mood or internal state. In this work, the features of the girl are suggested through soft, tonal transitions. The background is composed of horizontal, rhythmic lines that create a sense of vibration, typical of his later graphic work. By avoiding sharp outlines, Maris invites the viewer to complete the image, relying on the interplay of light across the paper surface. His technique in this print reflects a departure from traditional etching methods, which often prioritised clear, defined contours. Instead, he utilised the medium to explore the possibilities of sfumato, a technique more commonly associated with oil painting. The result is an image that feels ephemeral, as if the subject is emerging from or receding into a mist. This approach aligns with the Symbolist tendencies that began to influence his work during his time in London. The print captures the quiet, introspective quality that defined his later career, offering a glimpse into his pursuit of an elusive, poetic reality. It is a study in restraint, where the absence of detail serves to focus the viewer on the overall atmosphere of the composition.
