Anthonie Waterloo was a prominent Dutch etcher and painter, known for his focus on wooded scenery and rural life. This etching, Mercury and Argus, demonstrates his technical proficiency in the medium. Mercury is depicted playing a pipe to lull Argus to sleep, a narrative drawn from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The cow, representing Io, stands nearby, completing the mythological scene.
