This etching by Gerard de Lairesse depicts a scene from Homer's Odyssey, specifically the moment the god Mercury arrives to command the nymph Calypso to release the hero Ulysses. De Lairesse, a painter and etcher who spent much of his career in the Netherlands, was known for his adherence to classical principles and his theoretical writings on art. His style reflects the influence of French classicism, prioritising clear composition and idealised figures over the more emotive, painterly approaches of his contemporaries.
