Description
A satirical 1846 lithograph by Cham, depicting a dishevelled aristocrat in a humorous scene of post-dinner intoxication from the pages of Le Charivari.
This lithograph, titled Monsieur le Baron après souper, appeared in the French satirical periodical Le Charivari in 1846. The artist, Amédée de Noé, known by his pseudonym Cham, was a prolific contributor to the publication, which served as a platform for social and political commentary during the July Monarchy. The image depicts a scene of post-dinner intoxication, featuring a dishevelled aristocrat being assisted by a companion. The caption captures the Baron's slurred, defensive protestation against his helper, reflecting the common satirical tropes of the era that mocked the perceived moral decay and lack of decorum among the upper classes.
Cham employed a loose, expressive line quality characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century lithographic caricature. The composition focuses on the physical comedy of the figures, with the Baron's exaggerated, unsteady posture contrasted against the more composed stance of his companion. The background remains minimal, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction between the two men. A discarded top hat lies on the floor, serving as a visual shorthand for the Baron's loss of dignity. This work provides a glimpse into the visual culture of 1840s Paris, where lithography allowed for the rapid dissemination of humorous, often biting, observations on contemporary life. The print is a fine example of the satirical output that defined the pages of Le Charivari, a publication that frequently challenged the social hierarchies of its time through wit and visual irony. The technical execution demonstrates the capabilities of the lithographic process, allowing for subtle shading and expressive characterisation that defined the style of French caricature during this period.
