This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Morita Kanya VIII in the role of Kawachi Kanja, who is disguised as the monk Genkaibo. Produced in 1794, this work belongs to the brief but intense period of Sharaku's career, during which he created a series of actor portraits that departed from the idealised conventions of his contemporaries.

Sharaku focuses on the psychological state of the character rather than a flattering likeness. The actor is shown in a moment of tension, clutching a small pouch in his teeth while his hand rests on the hilt of his sword. The composition is stark, utilising a mica background that provides a subtle, metallic sheen, typical of the high-quality prints commissioned by the publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō. The lines are sharp and deliberate, capturing the specific facial features and the dramatic posture of the performer.

Unlike other ukiyo-e artists who often smoothed over the physical idiosyncrasies of their subjects, Sharaku emphasised the exaggerated expressions and angularity of the kabuki stage.
