Hasui Kawase, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, produced this woodblock print in 1930. The work depicts the Nijubashi Bridge, a structure located at the entrance to the Tokyo Imperial Palace. Kawase was known for his ability to capture the atmospheric qualities of the Japanese countryside and urban centres, often focusing on the interplay of light and water. In this composition, the artist employs a balanced palette to render the early morning light. The sky transitions from a soft pink hue to a clear blue, reflecting upon the calm surface of the moat below. The stone masonry of the bridge and the surrounding walls are rendered with precise, clean lines, characteristic of the collaborative process between the artist, carver, and printer.
