This lithograph by John Frederick Lewis depicts the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul, a structure commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent and designed by the architect Mimar Sinan. Lewis, a British artist known for his extensive travels through the Mediterranean and the Near East, produced this work during a period when European interest in Ottoman architecture was growing. His approach to the subject is characterised by a high degree of precision, capturing the structural complexity of the mosque's central dome and its surrounding minarets. The composition balances the monumental scale of the religious building with the daily life occurring in the foreground. Figures mounted on camels and individuals gathered near the mosque walls provide a sense of scale and context to the scene. Lewis employs a clear, linear style, using hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the stone masonry, the foliage of the trees, and the folds of the garments worn by the figures.
