This mezzotint by James McArdell depicts the actor James Quin in his most celebrated role: the Shakespearean character Sir John Falstaff. McArdell, an Irish engraver who moved to London, became a master of the mezzotint process. James Quin was a dominant figure on the London stage during the mid-eighteenth century.
