Description

A fine mezzotint portrait by James McArdell depicting the actor James Quin as the Shakespearean character Sir John Falstaff, produced in London c. 1746.

This mezzotint by James McArdell depicts the actor James Quin in his most celebrated role: the Shakespearean character Sir John Falstaff. McArdell, an Irish engraver who moved to London, became a master of the mezzotint process. This technique allowed for subtle gradations of tone, which are evident here in the soft modelling of the actor's costume and the atmospheric depth of the background.

James Quin was a dominant figure on the London stage during the mid-eighteenth century. His portrayal of Falstaff, a character known for his corpulence and wit, was widely recognised by contemporary audiences. In this print, Quin is shown in full costume, holding a sword and a buckler. The composition is theatrical, placing the subject in a sparse, architectural setting that draws attention to his physical presence and the details of his period attire. The inclusion of a small paper scrap at his feet, bearing an inscription, adds a layer of narrative detail common in eighteenth-century portraiture.

McArdell's work was instrumental in popularising the likenesses of actors and public figures of the era. By translating oil paintings into print, he made these images accessible to a wider audience beyond the patrons who could afford original canvases. The print captures the texture of the fabric, the sheen of the metal, and the soft light characteristic of the mezzotint medium. It remains a record of both the technical skill of the engraver and the performance style of a major theatrical personality of the Georgian period.
