Description
A portrait by John Hoppner showing Hester Jane Ogle carrying her son, Charles Brinsley Sheridan, in a rustic, pastoral setting.
This portrait by John Hoppner depicts Hester Jane Ogle, the second wife of the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, carrying their young son, Charles Brinsley Sheridan, upon her back. Painted around 1798, the work moves away from the formal, static conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture. Instead, Hoppner adopts a more informal, narrative approach, placing the figures within a rustic, outdoor setting that suggests a pastoral scene.
Hoppner, a contemporary of Sir Thomas Lawrence, was known for his ability to capture a sense of spontaneity in his subjects. Here, the mother is shown in a moment of maternal care, her expression gentle as she looks towards the side. The child, wearing a small hat, clings to her shoulders with a playful demeanour. The composition is balanced by the inclusion of a donkey, a common motif in the period's genre paintings, which adds to the rural atmosphere. The lighting is dramatic, with soft, diffused light illuminating the faces of the mother and child against the darker, shadowed foliage of the background.
The brushwork is fluid, particularly in the rendering of the drapery and the surrounding trees. Hoppner uses a palette of earthy tones, including ochre, deep brown, and muted blue, which harmonise with the natural environment. The painting reflects the late eighteenth-century interest in the 'fancy picture', a genre that combined portraiture with elements of everyday life or rustic fantasy. By presenting the sitters in this manner, Hoppner creates a scene that feels intimate and accessible, moving beyond the rigid hierarchies of aristocratic portraiture. The work remains a fine example of the artist's skill in blending character study with atmospheric composition, capturing a fleeting moment of domestic life with technical precision.
