This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham depicts the Roman legend of Gaius Mucius Scaevola. According to the narrative, Mucius infiltrated the camp of the Etruscan king Lars Porsena with the intent to assassinate him. Upon being captured, Mucius demonstrated his resolve by thrusting his right hand into a sacrificial fire, allowing it to burn without flinching. This act of defiance convinced Porsena to release him and negotiate peace.

Beham, one of the Little Masters of the German Renaissance, demonstrates his technical precision within this circular composition.
