Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin painted this work in 1910, during a period of significant stylistic development for the artist. The composition is a fresco, originally created for the Trinity Cathedral in Sumy. It depicts the biblical narrative of Cain and Abel with a distinct departure from traditional academic realism. Petrov-Vodkin employs a flattened perspective, which draws inspiration from early Russian icon painting and the frescoes of the Italian Renaissance, particularly the work of Piero della Francesca.

The figures are rendered with elongated proportions and a sense of weightlessness. Cain stands on the left, his posture conveying a mixture of shock and resignation, while the body of Abel lies recumbent on the right. The colour palette is restrained, utilising earthy ochres, muted greens, and soft blues. Above the figures, a large, circular motif dominates the upper portion of the frame, suggesting an all-seeing eye or a celestial presence that observes the transgression below. This geometric element introduces a sense of cosmic order to the tragic scene.

Petrov-Vodkin was known for his interest in spherical perspective and the synthesis of disparate artistic traditions. In this work, he avoids the dramatic chiaroscuro often associated with this subject matter in Western art. Instead, he opts for clear, rhythmic lines and a balanced distribution of forms. The work reflects his early exploration of symbolic themes, where the human form is treated as a vessel for universal concepts rather than a mere anatomical study. The absence of excessive detail allows the viewer to focus on the psychological tension between the two brothers.
