Musashi: Chichibu Sanchu - Utagawa Hiroshige II

This woodblock print is part of the series 'A Hundred Views of Famous Places in the Various Provinces', a project initiated by Utagawa Hiroshige and continued by his successor, Utagawa Hiroshige II. The composition depicts the mountainous terrain of the Chichibu region within the Musashi Province. The artist employs a vertical orientation to emphasise the steep, craggy cliffs that dominate the foreground, while a narrow path winds along the precipice, guiding the viewer's eye toward the distant horizon.

A slender waterfall cascades down the rock face on the left, providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal bands of the sky. The colour palette utilises the characteristic bokashi technique, where ink is applied to the woodblock in varying densities to create smooth gradients. This is particularly evident in the transition from the deep blue of the upper sky to the pale yellow of the setting sun. The sun itself is rendered as a bold, circular form, partially obscured by the dark, silhouetted hills in the middle ground.

Utagawa Hiroshige II, born Suzuki Chinpei, was a student of the master Hiroshige. He adopted the name of his teacher upon the latter's death, continuing the tradition of producing travel-themed prints that appealed to the growing interest in regional geography during the late Edo period. The print demonstrates the technical precision required for multi-block printing, with clear registration of the various colour fields. The inclusion of the cartouche in the upper right corner provides the series title and specific location, a standard convention in Japanese printmaking of the nineteenth century. This work offers a view of the Chichibu mountains, a region known for its rugged topography and religious sites, captured here through the stylistic lens of the Utagawa school.
