The narrative centres on the Roman hero who attempted to assassinate the Etruscan king Lars Porsena during the siege of Rome. Upon his capture, Mucius demonstrated his resolve by thrusting his right hand into a sacrificial fire, an act of defiance that earned him the cognomen Scaevola, meaning left-handed.

Aldegrever, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, demonstrates his technical proficiency through precise line work and cross-hatching. The composition is structured around the central figure of Mucius, who stands with a muscular, athletic physique typical of the period's interest in classical anatomy.
