Description
A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu II, depicting two Kabuki actors in their iconic roles as the lovers Agemaki and Sukeroku.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu II depicts two celebrated Kabuki actors, Nakamura Tomijuro and Nakamura Shichisaburo II, in their roles as the lovers Agemaki and Sukeroku. The Torii school held a monopoly on the production of theatrical prints, known as yakusha-e, during the Edo period. Their work served as promotional material for the playhouses of the time, capturing the likenesses and costumes of popular performers.
The composition is characteristic of the early Ukiyo-e style, featuring bold, calligraphic lines that define the figures against a simplified background. The actors are shown beneath a large umbrella, a common motif in theatrical scenes to denote intimacy or travel. Their kimonos are decorated with patterns that identify their characters, while the surrounding environment is suggested through minimal, symbolic elements like the bridge and the birds in flight. The print employs a limited colour palette, typical of the beni-zuri-e technique, which relied on a few key pigments to create visual interest before the advent of full-colour nishiki-e printing.
Kiyonobu II followed the stylistic conventions established by his predecessor, Kiyonobu I, focusing on the expressive power of the line to convey the dramatic tension of the stage. The figures possess a distinct, elongated grace, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the mid-eighteenth century. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of popular theatre and visual art in Japan, where the fame of the actors and the skill of the printmaker combined to create objects of mass appeal. The work remains a clear example of the formalised approach to portraiture within the Torii school, where the identity of the actor is prioritised over realistic anatomical representation.
