Giorgio Ghisi, a master engraver from Mantua, produced this complex depiction of the Nativity in 1553. The composition demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of his work, utilising fine hatching and cross-hatching to define form and light. The scene is divided into two distinct zones: the earthly realm of the Holy Family and the shepherds, and the celestial sphere above.

In the lower portion, the Virgin Mary kneels in adoration before the infant Jesus, surrounded by figures whose muscular anatomy reflects the influence of Michelangelo. The architectural elements, including the ruined structure of the stable, provide a sense of depth that leads the eye toward a distant, rolling landscape. Ghisi employs a high degree of detail in the textures of the drapery, the straw, and the surrounding masonry.

Above, a group of putti dance in a circle, framing a radiant star that casts beams of light across the entire scene. This celestial activity creates a sense of movement that contrasts with the quiet devotion below. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions within circular cartouches at the top corners provides theological context, a common feature in sixteenth-century printmaking. Ghisi was known for his ability to translate the monumental scale of paintings into the medium of engraving, and this work is a clear example of his skill in managing large, multi-figure compositions.
