Description
A classical allegorical engraving by Gérard Audran, depicting the personification of Navigation with an oar and architectural crown.
This engraving by Gérard Audran depicts the personification of Navigation, a classical allegorical figure. Audran, a member of a prominent family of French engravers, was known for his technical precision and his ability to translate the works of masters into the medium of print. This particular work demonstrates his command of line and shadow, using cross-hatching to define the folds of the drapery and the weight of the figure.
The figure stands in a contrapposto stance, balancing her weight while holding a long oar. She wears a classical chiton, and her head is crowned with a capital, suggesting her role as a caryatid or a structural element within a larger architectural scheme. The base upon which she stands is inscribed with the word 'NAVIGATION', clearly identifying the subject. The composition is clean and focused, typical of the academic style favoured in the French court during the late seventeenth century.
Audran often collaborated with other artists, and this print reflects the influence of Raphael, as noted by the 'Raphael in.' (Raphael invenit) inscription at the bottom. The work is a fine example of the reproductive printmaking tradition, where engravers were tasked with disseminating the compositions of great painters and sculptors to a wider audience. The print captures the sculptural quality of the original design, with the shading providing a sense of volume and form. The clean lines and balanced composition make this a representative piece of the period, reflecting the interest in classical iconography and the rigorous training of the French printmaking school.
