Description
A precise 1924 portrait of the artist's daughter, Nelly, rendered in the meticulous style of the New Objectivity movement.
Painted in 1924, this work depicts the artist's daughter, Nelly, amidst a dense thicket of flora. Otto Dix, a central figure of the New Objectivity movement, moved away from the chaotic distortion of his earlier Expressionist works during this period. He adopted a meticulous, almost archaic technique reminiscent of sixteenth-century German masters. The painting demonstrates his return to traditional oil and tempera methods, which allowed for the precise rendering of textures, from the child's soft skin to the varied petals of the surrounding garden.
The composition places the toddler in a vertical, slightly claustrophobic space. She is surrounded by oversized geraniums, roses, and dandelions, which create a sense of scale that emphasises her small stature. Her expression is serious, a common trait in Dix's portraiture, which often avoided sentimental idealisation. The child wears a simple white dress with a ruffled collar, contrasting with the dark, earthy tones of the ground and the saturated reds and greens of the vegetation.
Dix's attention to detail is evident in the small elements scattered throughout the scene, such as the snail near the bottom right and the bumblebee near the top. These additions provide a sense of natural observation, yet the overall arrangement feels staged and deliberate. The work reflects the artist's fascination with the objective reality of his subjects, capturing the physical presence of his daughter with clinical precision. By blending the innocence of childhood with a stark, unvarnished aesthetic, Dix creates a portrait that feels both intimate and detached. This piece remains a clear example of his technical mastery during the Weimar Republic, showcasing his ability to balance fine detail with a firm, structured composition.
