Jacob Jordaens, a contemporary of Peter Paul Rubens, produced this work during the height of the Flemish Baroque period. The composition depicts the classical myth of Neptune, the god of the sea, striking the earth with his trident to bring forth the horse. Jordaens employs a dramatic, theatrical arrangement of figures, characteristic of his approach to mythological subjects. The central figure of Neptune is seen from behind, his muscular form rendered with strong chiaroscuro, as he gestures towards the emerging stallion.

To the left, a female figure, often interpreted as Amphitrite or a personification of the sea, sits amidst red drapery, accompanied by a putto. The scene is populated by various marine deities and attendants, creating a sense of crowded, energetic movement.
