A woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I showing a lively New Year's celebration at the Ogi-ya teahouse. The print captures the festive atmosphere and intricate details of Edo-period Japanese life.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825) depicts a scene from the Ogi-ya teahouse during New Year's celebrations. Toyokuni I was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist from the Edo period, known for his prints of actors and beautiful women (bijin-ga). He headed the Utagawa school for almost 30 years and greatly influenced the direction of ukiyo-e. The print shows a bustling interior scene, with numerous women in kimonos attending to various tasks and greeting guests. The composition is complex, with figures arranged across multiple levels and in various poses, creating a sense of depth and activity. The colour palette is muted, with soft tones of red, green, and grey dominating the scene. The details of the kimonos, hairstyles, and interior decorations are rendered with precision, providing a glimpse into the culture and customs of the time. The overall effect is one of festive energy and social interaction.
