Description
A striking 1938 woodcut by Bernard Willem Wierink, featuring symbolic figures of Peace and Justice in a bold, monochromatic graphic style.
This woodcut, titled Nieuwjaarswens voor het jaar 1938, is a graphic work by the Dutch artist Bernard Willem Wierink. Created in the final years of his life, the print reflects the stylistic leanings of the Art Nouveau period, characterised by bold, high-contrast imagery and a focus on symbolic representation. The composition features two figures standing side by side, representing Peace and Justice. One figure holds a branch, while the other carries the traditional scales of justice. Above them, a rising sun symbolises hope, accompanied by the Dutch text VREDE en RECHT, meaning Peace and Justice. The lower section includes the inscription ZIJ MET ONS ALLEN IN 1938, which translates to Be with us all in 1938.
Wierink utilised the woodcut medium to create a stark, monochromatic aesthetic. The heavy black ink blocks provide a solid background, allowing the white lines of the figures and text to emerge with clarity. This technique was common in early twentieth-century graphic design, where artists sought to combine traditional craft with modern, legible communication. The figures are rendered with simplified, elongated forms typical of Wierink's approach to decorative illustration. The work functions as a seasonal greeting, blending political idealism with the personal touch of a hand-carved print. It captures a specific moment in European history, just before the outbreak of the Second World War, when the themes of peace and justice held particular weight. The print remains a clear example of the artist's ability to distil complex social concepts into a singular, graphic image suitable for reproduction and distribution.
