Description
A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting the atmospheric scene of a rain-swept pine tree at Karasaki on the shores of Lake Biwa.
Night Rain at Karasaki is a woodblock print from the series Eight Views of Omi, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the 1830s. The series draws upon a long-standing tradition of depicting the Omi province, specifically the area surrounding Lake Biwa, which was a subject of interest for poets and artists for centuries.
This composition focuses on the famous pine tree at Karasaki, a site known for its immense size and age. Hiroshige employs a sophisticated use of bokashi, a technique involving the manual gradation of ink on the woodblock, to render the heavy, atmospheric downpour. The vertical lines of rain obscure the details of the massive pine, creating a sense of depth and dampness. The dark, silhouette-like form of the tree contrasts with the lighter, misty areas of the composition, while the blue tones of the water and the stone embankment provide a stable base for the scene.
To the right, the architectural elements of the shrine are visible, partially shrouded by the weather. The inclusion of a small boat in the foreground adds a human element to the otherwise quiet, elemental scene. Hiroshige was a master of capturing meteorological conditions, and this print is an example of his ability to convey mood through the depiction of weather. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo-period woodblock printing process, where multiple blocks were carved and aligned to achieve the final image. The composition avoids unnecessary clutter, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the natural form of the pine and the pervasive rain.
