Henry Herbert La Thangue was a central figure of the Newlyn School, a group of British artists who adopted the French practice of painting en plein air. This work, Nightfall (The Gleaners), captures the final moments of a working day in the fields. The composition focuses on a solitary figure carrying a heavy sheaf of corn, her posture suggesting the physical toll of agricultural labour. In the distance, other figures continue their tasks under the dim light of a rising moon.

La Thangue utilised a technique characterised by broken brushwork and a muted palette, which allows him to render the specific atmospheric conditions of twilight. The golden tones of the harvested grain contrast with the encroaching shadows of the evening, creating a sense of quietude and exhaustion. Unlike the idealised rural scenes common in earlier Victorian art, this painting presents the reality of manual work with directness. His training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris influenced his approach to light and form, moving away from the rigid academic style of his contemporaries.
