Charles-François Daubigny was a central figure of the Barbizon School, known for his direct observation of nature and his dedication to plein air painting. This etching, titled Nightpiece, demonstrates his technical mastery of the medium. Daubigny utilised dense, cross-hatched lines to construct the deep shadows of the night, allowing the light of the moon to emerge through the negative space of the paper.

The composition focuses on the reflection of moonlight upon the water, a recurring theme in his work. The silhouettes of trees frame the scene, creating a sense of quietude. Daubigny often worked from his studio boat, the Botin, which allowed him to observe the riverbanks of the Oise and Seine at various times of day.
