This etching depicts the ruins of the Nymphaeum of Alexander Severus, a structure historically misidentified in the seventeenth century as the Castello dell'Acqua Marcia. Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, a prominent Roman publisher and printmaker, produced this work as part of a broader documentation of the city's classical remains. The composition captures the weathered masonry of the structure, which sits atop a mound, framed by the arched remnants of the ancient Roman water distribution system.

The print displays the characteristic precision of seventeenth-century architectural documentation. Fine cross-hatching defines the textures of the crumbling stone and the surrounding vegetation, while the sky is rendered with delicate, parallel lines to suggest atmospheric depth.
