Ochanomizu in the Mist - Utagawa Kunisada

Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, is primarily recognised for his prolific output of actor prints and bijin-ga, or images of beautiful women. This work, however, demonstrates his capability in the genre of meisho-e, or pictures of famous places. Ochanomizu, a district in Edo, is depicted here with a focus on atmospheric conditions rather than strict topographical accuracy.

The composition utilises a classic ukiyo-e approach to depth, framing the canal with steep, craggy banks that recede into a pale, misty distance. The use of bokashi, a technique involving the manual gradation of ink on the woodblock, creates the soft, ethereal quality of the fog that obscures the background. The water is rendered in a distinct, flat blue, providing a cool contrast to the muted, earthy tones of the cliffs and the sparse vegetation clinging to the rock faces.

Kunisada employs a calligraphic line quality to define the textures of the stone and the gnarled forms of the trees. The print is part of a series that explores the natural beauty of the Edo region, reflecting the period's interest in travel and the appreciation of local scenery. The inclusion of a cartouche on the left side identifies the subject, while the artist's signature and seal are positioned on the right. This print offers a quiet, contemplative view of a location that has undergone significant urban change since the nineteenth century. It serves as a visual record of the aesthetic priorities of the late Edo period, where the interplay between human-made structures and the natural environment was a common subject for woodblock artists.
