This triptych by Chōbunsai Eishi captures a procession within the Yoshiwara, the licensed pleasure district of Edo. Eishi, a former painter in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to printmaking, bringing a refined aesthetic to the depiction of courtesans. The composition features several oiran, the highest-ranking courtesans, accompanied by their young attendants, known as kamuro. They move through the Ō Mon, the main gate that served as the threshold between the city and the enclosed world of the district.

The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and graceful postures characteristic of Eishi's mature style. Their kimonos are rendered with subtle patterns, and the colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted greens, and charcoal tones. This choice of colour avoids the high-chroma pigments found in later prints, allowing the focus to remain on the fluid lines of the figures and the architectural framing of the gate. The background provides a sense of depth, drawing the eye toward the distant street scene beyond the gate, while the foreground remains occupied by the deliberate, rhythmic movement of the women.

Eishi was known for his ability to convey the status of his subjects through their attire and their interactions with their entourage. The print functions as a record of the social theatre of the Yoshiwara, where the appearance of these women was a public event. By placing them within the architectural context of the gate, the artist creates a narrative of transition and display. The work is a fine example of the bijin-ga genre, which focused on the depiction of beautiful women, yet it distinguishes itself through its architectural scale and the careful arrangement of multiple figures across the three sheets.
