This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts the kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorō I in the role of Izumi no Saburō. The work originates from the mid-Edo period, a time when the theatre culture of Edo flourished alongside the production of actor prints, known as yakusha-e. Bunchō, active during the latter half of the eighteenth century, gained recognition for his slim, elegant figures and his ability to capture the specific features of actors on stage.

The composition presents the actor in a formal, kneeling posture. He wears a patterned kimono with wide shoulders, typical of the period's theatrical costume design. The actor holds a small hand drum, while two swords are tucked into his sash, indicating his status as a samurai character. The background features a stylised depiction of plum blossoms against a lattice screen, providing a seasonal context for the performance. The muted colour palette relies on earthy tones, with accents of red and green, which were common in the printing techniques of the era.

Bunchō was a contemporary of Katsukawa Shunshō, and together they moved away from the more generic actor depictions of earlier artists. Instead, they focused on individualised facial expressions and realistic portrayals of performers. This print exemplifies the refined aesthetic of the period, where the focus remains on the actor's presence and the specific iconography of the play.
