Description

A political illustration by Johan Braakensiek, originally created for the Dutch magazine De Amsterdammer in 1907.

This ink drawing by Johan Braakensiek serves as a preparatory study for a political cartoon published in the Dutch weekly magazine De Amsterdammer on 1 December 1907. Braakensiek was a prolific illustrator known for his sharp observations of contemporary European political affairs. His work often appeared in the pages of this publication, providing visual commentary on the social and diplomatic tensions of the early twentieth century.

The composition features a central figure of a police officer standing guard before a doorway labelled 'Portugal'. To the right, a group of women are positioned near an entrance marked 'Spanje'. The drawing employs a direct, economical line quality, typical of the artist's working method for press illustrations. Braakensiek uses minimal shading, relying instead on the clarity of his outlines to convey the narrative. The figures are rendered with a sense of immediacy, capturing the essence of the scene without unnecessary detail. The inclusion of text labels within the image provides context for the viewer, identifying the specific national allegories being employed in this political satire.

As a study, the work reveals the artist's process, showing faint pencil guidelines beneath the final ink strokes. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with its origin as a working document for a periodical. This piece offers a glimpse into the editorial practices of the era, where artists were required to produce timely, legible, and impactful imagery for a mass audience. The work remains a clear example of the role of the illustrator in shaping public perception of international relations during the pre-war period in Europe.
