Auguste Rodin produced this figure during his formative period in Brussels. The work depicts a male nude in a state of awakening, with one arm raised to the head and the other hanging loosely at the side. The posture suggests a transition from sleep to consciousness, a theme Rodin explored through the tension of the musculature and the subtle shift in weight across the legs.

Rodin utilised a live model for this sculpture, a Belgian soldier named Auguste Neyt. The level of anatomical detail caused controversy upon its initial exhibition, as critics accused the artist of casting directly from the human body. Rodin defended his process by providing photographs of the model and demonstrating the preparatory drawings he made to capture the form. This experience shaped his approach to sculpture, moving away from the rigid academic standards of the time toward a more fluid, expressive treatment of the human figure.

The surface of the bronze retains the marks of the artist's hand, capturing the play of light across the torso and limbs. Unlike the polished surfaces favoured by his contemporaries, Rodin allowed the material to reflect the energy of the modelling process. The figure stands on a rough, unrefined base, which provides a contrast to the anatomical precision of the body.
