Konstantin Somov, a founding member of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, frequently turned his attention to the formal gardens of the Russian imperial estates. This work depicts the grounds of Oranienbaum, a residence near Saint Petersburg. Somov employs a deliberate, stylised approach to the park setting, moving away from strict realism to capture a mood of quiet, historical reflection. The composition is anchored by the deep, elongated shadows cast across the foreground, which contrast with the bright, almost artificial blue of the sky.

In the middle ground, classical statuary punctuates the path, serving as silent observers within the manicured environment. The architecture, partially obscured by the dense foliage, hints at the grandeur of the eighteenth-century Russian court, a period that held a particular fascination for Somov and his contemporaries.
