This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham, dated 1543, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the Little Masters, a group of German printmakers known for their small-scale, highly detailed works. The composition centres on a satyr's head, rendered with a stern, almost weary expression, framed by a dense arrangement of acanthus leaves and a structured wreath. Beham employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the face and the curling edges of the foliage, creating a sense of volume within a two-dimensional plane.

The satyr, a figure from classical mythology, appears frequently in Renaissance decorative arts. Here, the creature is integrated into a formalised, symmetrical design that reflects the period's fascination with antiquity and the revival of classical motifs. The beard of the satyr transitions into leaf-like forms, a stylistic choice that blurs the boundary between the organic and the decorative. The presence of his monogram, 'HSB', and the date '1543' in the lower corner confirms the work's origin during his mature period in Frankfurt.
