This etching, produced by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert after a design by Maarten van Heemskerck, depicts the submission of Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse, to Emperor Charles V following the Schmalkaldic War. The composition follows the conventions of sixteenth-century historical printmaking, placing the Emperor on a raised dais under a canopy, a visual device used to communicate authority and imperial power. The Landgrave is shown kneeling before the throne, a gesture of total capitulation.

Coornhert employs a precise engraving technique to render the textures of the figures' garments, from the heavy velvet robes of the ecclesiastical figures on the left to the ornate armour worn by the courtiers on the right. The background is kept relatively shallow, focusing the viewer on the central interaction between the two primary figures. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print provides a contemporary commentary on the event, framing the surrender as a moment of political transformation within the Holy Roman Empire.

Maarten van Heemskerck, credited as the inventor of the scene, was a significant figure in the dissemination of Italianate styles within the Netherlands. His influence is visible in the structured, theatrical arrangement of the figures and the classical architectural elements framing the scene. This print serves as a record of the political tensions of the mid-sixteenth century, capturing the formalised nature of imperial diplomacy.
